MAHA VIHARA DUTA MAITREYA, Getting to Know the Largest Vihara in Southeast Asia

Vihara is a place of Buddhist worship, Maha Vihara Duta Maitreya is the largest vihara not only in Batam, but also the largest vihara in Indonesia and even in Southeast Asia.
The monastery is located in the Maha Vihara Duta Maitreya Complex Bukit Beruntung, Sungai Panas, Batam Kota, Riau Islands. The monastery is open every day from 7-5pm. Interestingly, we do not need to pay a ticket to enter this temple.
This temple is visited by tourists from various countries in the world. Most of them are Chinese and Korean tourists. In addition, this monastery is also visited by local tourists from Sabang to Merauke. It can be said that this monastery has an extraordinary attraction. The attractions are as follows:

3 Buddha and Bodhisattva Shrines

When visiting Maha Vihara Duta Maitreya, we are immediately presented with the existence of 3 large shrines which are the main attractions in this monastery. The 3 Graha include the Avalokitesvara Bodhisattva Graha, the Sakyamuni Buddha Graha, and also the Satyakalama Bodhisattva Graha.

Wall Carvings of Buddha and Bodhisattva Stories

On the outer wall of each altar, there are tiles carved with images and stories of Buddhas and Bodhisattvas. The stories of the Buddha and Bodhisattva are carved in Chinese characters, and the carvings are about the journey of the Buddha and Bodhisattva during their lifetime.

Bread and Coffee Happiness

Apart from having a restaurant that sells a variety of vegetarian food, there is also a cafe that sells a variety of bread and coffee, this cafe is called Loving Nature Fortunate Coffee (幸福咖啡). The bread and coffee at this cafe are known as Happiness Bread (幸福面包) and Happiness Coffee (幸福咖啡).
The uniqueness of this bread and coffee compared to the usual bread and coffee is in the manufacturing process, which does not use yeast as a developer.
In addition, the coffee sold at this cafe does not use instant coffee powder, but rather uses coffee beans that are professionally ground and brewed by the cafe’s baristas.

Universal Love Cultural Arts Festival
The Universal Love Cultural Arts Festival is an annual event that is regularly held by the Maha Vihara Duta Maitreya. In this festival, we can enjoy a variety of culinary and also dance team performances from various regions in Riau-Kepri.
This festival is only held once a year around June-July. If you want to join the Festival of Universal Love, make sure to visit Maha Vihara Duta Maitreya during that month.
