luti gendang, culinary snack of the archipelago

Luti Gendang is widely sold in coffee shops in the Riau Islands Province, such as Batam, Tanjungpinang and Karimun. Luti Gendang originated from Anambas, Kepri.

The name Luti Gendang itself comes from the dialect of the Chinese people who pronounce the word ‘roti’ as ‘luti’. While the word ‘gendang’ is known to be the word ‘rendang’ which in Tarempa language means fried.

This food is usually served in the morning accompanied by hot coffee or tea for breakfast. This includes a number of other foods such as nasi dagang and various other traditional cakes.

This bread-shaped dish, which contains processed chicken meat and other seasonings, is also perfect as a souvenir.

For souvenirs, the luti gendang that tourists usually buy is still in a half-cooked state. The cooked ones are better enjoyed on the spot, accompanied by a glass of cold tea or milk tea.

If put in the refrigerator, luti gendang can last up to four days. If stored in the freezer, it can last up to three weeks. However, if not refrigerated, it will only last two days.

Luti gendang itself is made from wheat flour, eggs, white sugar, butter, baker’s yeast, fish, onions, salt and chili. Uniquely, until now the process of making luti gendang is still done traditionally.
