Budhi Bhakti Monastery, the Oldest Monastery in Batam City, Built Since 1970
Of the many monasteries, Budhi Bhakti Monastery is the oldest in Batam.
Built since the 1970s, the monastery was inaugurated in 1986, and is often called Windsor Monastery because of its location in Windsor, Nagoya, Batam.
Confucian and Buddhist communities in Batam as well as tourists from Singapore, Malaysia, Thailand, Korea and Japan often come to pray and ask for sustenance. Not a few prayers of citizens are granted. Because of its efficacy, this temple is visited by many locals and tourists. Visitors to this temple claim to be serene and comfortable.
This monastery consists of 2 main buildings, namely the temple at the front and the monastery building which is located slightly inside.
The difference is that the temple is used for praying by Confucians or Tri Dharma believers, while the monastery is for Buddhists. The temple building is red in color with Chinese interitors dominating. As for the monastery building, it looks dashing with white paint.
The red-dominated building consists of several parts where each offering room has its God. On the front wall of the main building there are paintings and reliefs of gods. There is a 2-lane staircase outside the building that leads to the prayer place on the 2nd floor. In this monastery, there is a main prayer room with gods in it. Inside this prayer room, there are Buddhist religious books.
Then in the side yard, still within the fence of the monastery complex, there are various statues of gods. While on the side there is also a vegetarian food stall which is also a mainstay. No less beautiful, there is a beautiful garden in front of the temple building complete with a koi fish pond. In this park, there are many statues such as the statue of Maitreya Buddha, the statue of Dewi Kwan Im and many more. There are also various statues such as ship statues to equestrian admirals depicting Chinese history and culture.
Tua Pek Kong’s prowess becomes even more apparent during Chinese religious holidays. This old temple was moved from Sei Jodoh when the area was extensively reorganized. In the park, there are many statues such as the Maitreya Buddha statue, the Goddess Kwan Im statue and many more. There are also various statues such as ship statues to admirals on horseback that depict stories of Chinese history and culture.
Tua Pek Kong’s prowess becomes even more apparent during Chinese religious holidays. This old temple was moved from Sei Jodoh when the area was massively reorganized.
The temple with the full name Vihara Budhi Bhakti Tua Pek Kong Bio was inaugurated in 1986.
The monastery is located on Pembangunan street, Lubuk Baja, Batam city. The greatness of Tua Pek Kong is able to attract migrants, especially for neighboring countries Singapore, Malaysia, even to Korea and China. Budhi Bhakti Tua Pek Kong Bio Monastery is located on a two-lane vehicle track, making it easy to reach. Its position in the middle of the city is the main choice for tourists to pray because it is also close to shopping centers.
In this old monastery, interesting events are often held during Chinese New Year, Cap Gomeh or commemorative days. In addition to Chinese New Year and Cap Go Meh, Confucianists in Batam often hold events to commemorate the death of the Prophet Khonghucu at Tua Pek Kong, Windsor. During the Lunar New Year commemoration event, thousands of people packed the Tua Pek Kong Bio monastery to watch entertainment in the form of Dragon and Lion Dance rituals. Magic attractions and fireworks also entertain visitors on certain holidays.
