Kampung Vietnam (Pulau Galang)

Vietnam Village is one of the historical tourist destinations located on Galang Island, about 50 kilometers from the center of Batam. This village used to be a refugee camp for thousands of Vietnamese who fled the civil war in their country in the 1970s to 1980s. They were known as “boat people” because many used small boats to sail the ocean in search of a safe place.

History of Kampung Vietnam
The camp was established by the international refugee agency, UNHCR (United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees), in collaboration with the Indonesian government. At its peak, the camp housed more than 250,000 Vietnamese refugees. They lived there for years before being relocated to other countries such as the United States, Canada, or Australia, or returned to Vietnam after the situation there improved.
