Admiral Cheng Ho Mosque in Batam: History and Fusion of Chinese, Islamic and Indonesian Cultures
The Laksamana Cheng Ho Mosque that stands majestically in the Golden City area, Bengkong, Batam City, Riau Islands (Kepri) has become one of the icons of this city. The red-colored mosque was built in 2015.
The mosque with typical Chinese bamboo curtain country ornaments was built by a Batam businessman as an effort to commemorate the history of the journey of a Chinese admiral and his men to Indonesia who brought the teachings of Islam. The existence of this mosque proves the acculturation between Chinese, Islamic and Indonesian cultures are intertwined so closely in the city of Batam.
Admiral Cheng Ho himself was a sea admiral who came from China. He was trusted to lead a shipping expedition with approximately 27,000 of his men sailing to Indonesia. This event occurred 7 times in the period of 1416.
Admiral Cheng Ho was also entrusted by the Chinese Emperor Yongle who ruled from 1403 to 1424.
If you pass in front of the mosque at a glance, it will look like a temple. The mosque, which was built without a dome, is decorated with various ornaments combined with a series of Arabic letters.
Cheng Ho Mosque was inaugurated by the Coordinating Minister for Maritime Affairs Dwisuryo Indroyono Soesilo and Tourism Minister Arief Yahya on February 21, 2015.
Cheng Ho Mosque Batam City is built on a land area of 80×80 meters, with the building itself only 20×30 meters. Quite small for the size of the capacity of approximately 200 worshipers, but this mosque is quite crowded used by local residents to worship.
Cheng Ho Mosque is also used as a religious tourism destination both local residents of Batam and residents of neighboring countries such as Malaysia and Singapore. In addition to worshiping at the mosque, the congregation at the location seemed to occasionally capture the moment by taking photos to be used as a memento.
